Are the buttons on your shirt at the left side or at the right? There’s really a pretty easy answer: if you wear ladies‘ garb, the buttons are at the left aspect of the shirt. But, in case you wear guys’ shirts, the buttons line up on the right side.
The records of buttons is intriguing. What’s even extra thrilling is the reason behind their distinct placement on shirts for males and females. From horses to babies to napoleon.
Napoleon Bonaparte’s scheme
All of his portraits have his right hand tucked into the coat which could only be achieved if the buttoning was from left to right. It is said that women used to stick their hand in just like he did, mimicking & mocking him. He then ordered all women’s clothing to have buttons on the opposite side so that they could no longer do that.
The most widely touted theory by far is that the practice of reversing buttons on men’s and women’s clothing stems back to the time of elaborate dress of gentlemen and ladies when upper-class women, particularly during the Victorian era, wore so many layers that it was necessary for them to be dressed by a servant or maid. As such, it became customary to make clothes for women that were slightly easier for other people to button up, specifically right handed people.
Men’s clothes were left with the button on the right, as has been common throughout the history of buttoning, because most men tended to dress themselves.
